Thai Nguyen Province Faces Severe Teacher Shortage, Lacking Nearly 5,900 Educators

According to a report from the Department of Education and Training of Thai Nguyen Province, the province will require a total of 32,442 teachers, administrators, and educational staff for the 2026-2027 academic year, based on the number of classes, branches, and students. However, compared to the allocated staffing quota, there will be a deficit of 5,857 individuals, including 9 administrators, 3,007 teachers, and 2,841 support staff. This teacher shortage poses a significant challenge to maintaining educational quality and supporting future development in Vietnam. Factors such as the outflow of talent to urban areas and a decline in the attractiveness of the teaching profession are thought to be particularly influential in rural areas and regions with rapid economic development. Thai Nguyen Province is implementing various measures to develop the education sector, including promoting digital transformation, providing financial support to public educational institutions, and strengthening disaster prevention education. However, resolving the fundamental teacher shortage will require a broader policy approach. Under Vietnam's one-party system, educational policy is positioned as part of the nation's long-term development strategy, with human resource development forming the foundation of economic growth. Nevertheless, challenges such as staffing shortages and infrastructure issues persist in local educational settings. Specifically, a lack of teachers can lead to a decline in educational quality, potentially affecting future economic competitiveness. These circumstances represent one of the challenges in realizing Vietnam's goal of becoming a 'rich and strong nation.'
