Son Steals Mother's Savings for Crypto Gifts on TikTok, Gets 7 Years

In Can Tho City, southern Vietnam, the appellate court on September 4 upheld a 7-year prison sentence for Tran Cua Loi, who stole approximately 450 million VND (around $18,000 USD) from his mother's savings to purchase virtual currency for TikTok streamers. The city’s People’s Court confirmed the initial ruling. Loi repeatedly stole the cash, which his mother had hidden in a wooden box under her bed, on nine separate occasions. The stolen funds were then converted into virtual currency and used to buy gifts for live streamers on TikTok who were singing. This case highlights how the culture of gifting and virtual presents on social media platforms can lead to criminal activities. In recent years, platforms like TikTok have gained immense popularity among Vietnamese youth, fostering a culture where viewers send money or virtual gifts to streamers during live broadcasts. While often an expression of support and appreciation, this practice can also lead to excessive spending and, as seen in this case, can even instigate criminal behavior. This series of events points to the rapid digital transformation occurring in Vietnamese society and the emergence of new social issues. It particularly prompts a re-evaluation of online spending habits and interpersonal relationships on social media among younger generations. The Vietnamese government is under pressure to strengthen oversight of online illicit activities and fraud while also fostering a healthy digital culture.
