Australia, MoES Launch Animated Audio Stories to Boost Lao Language Learning

The Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES), with support from the Australian Government, has introduced animated audio stories to bolster Lao language learning for children who speak languages other than Lao at home. This initiative, as highlighted by Director General Vongphet Oudomlit of the Research Institute for Educational Sciences (RIES), aims to enhance the learning experience for young students. The new resources are a product of close collaboration between Australia and MoES through the BEQUAL program, focusing on strengthening language acquisition for primary school children who do not use Lao as their first language. The "Spoken Lao" approach was first piloted in several provinces before its nationwide expansion for the 2024–2025 school year. Implementation results indicate that these lessons help children speak more confidently, improve their comprehension, and participate more actively in learning. Director General Oudomlit noted, "In today's world, where children and families increasingly rely on audio and images rather than text alone, transforming these stories into audios and animations makes them even more accessible and attractive." The collection comprises 50 animated audio stories drawn from Grade 1 Lao Language and "Spoken Lao" textbooks. They cover everyday situations relevant to young learners, such as discussions about family, seeking assistance, and classroom participation. Michael Currie, Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Laos, stated, "Australia strongly supports Spoken Lao because it addresses a real equity challenge for children who start school not speaking the language of instruction. When children build strong language skills early, they are better able to engage in learning across all subjects, succeed at school and build a future for themselves and the nation." He expressed pride in supporting this significant initiative and valued the partnership with MoES. These new resources can be utilized in classrooms or at home. Teachers can play them during lessons to provide authentic language examples, while students can listen independently or with their families outside of school. Exposure to different voices and storytelling styles aids young learners in developing listening skills, retaining new vocabulary, and gaining confidence in using Lao language for daily communication. Building on the success of Grade 1, RIES is now guiding the development of materials for Grade 2, with nationwide implementation planned for the 2027–2028 school year.
