Thailand, Myanmar discuss border security and river pollution

The Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Don Pramudwinai, met with Myanmar's interim Foreign Minister, Tin Maung Swe, on July 11, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand announced on July 12. The meeting took place while Tin Maung Swe was in Thailand to attend an informal meeting between ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the Foreign Minister of Myanmar. According to the statement, both sides reaffirmed the close relationship that has long existed between the two neighboring countries. Furthermore, they discussed border security, environmental issues, particularly the issue of river pollution, and economic cooperation. It was also stated that views were exchanged on ways to cooperate to facilitate cross-border trade and enhance economic connectivity between the two countries. In addition, the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand indicated that both sides discussed Myanmar's engagement with ASEAN and the situation regarding the peace and national reconciliation process within Myanmar.
