Fuel Prices See Modest Drop in Philippines, Household Burden Persists

Following weeks of sustained oil price hikes, local diesel and gasoline prices in the Philippines saw a decrease of less than P1 per liter on August 4. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin announced on Monday that gasoline prices would fall by 73 centavos and diesel by 60 centavos per liter. Kerosene prices, however, experienced a more substantial drop of P2.09 per liter. "I know that many of you are still feeling the weight of the past week’s increases, but every rollback matters. It means a little less pressure on our drivers, farmers, and small businesses who move this economy every single day," Garin stated. She further emphasized the ongoing geopolitical instability, saying, "This shows the fact that the Middle East conflict is still volatile, and we still have to brace ourselves and be prudent with our spending, as far as fuel is concerned." Leo Bellas, president of Jetti Petroleum, had earlier commented late last week, "Both diesel and gasoline products face further potential supply tightness as geopolitical tensions continue to disrupt regional refinery operations." This statement underscores the delicate balance of global oil markets, where regional conflicts can have ripple effects on supply and pricing.
