Pia Cayetano Faces Disbarment Warnings Over Spliced Diokno Video

Senator Pia Cayetano is facing warnings of possible disbarment and disciplinary action after sharing a spliced video featuring Representative Chel Diokno on Facebook. The edited video, which appeared to suggest accusations without evidence regarding Vice President Sara Duterte's financial records, has drawn criticism from legal professionals and public figures. The one-minute video, shared by Cayetano, who is also a law graduate, was edited to omit Diokno's full explanation regarding the prosecution's request for subpoena of Duterte's financial records. The original context showed Diokno clarifying that the request was not a "fishing expedition" but was based on probable cause from Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) reports indicating billions of pesos passing through the Vice President's and her spouse's accounts. He explained that bank records could only be released via court order or subpoena, and that such a subpoena would allow both sides to present their case based on the totality of evidence. Diokno himself responded by posting his complete statement to correct the misinformation. Meanwhile, Representative Zia Alonto Adiong, spokesperson for the House prosecution panel, called out Senator Cayetano for her post, emphasizing that as a senator-judge in the impeachment proceedings, she is expected to remain impartial. Adiong also raised concerns about a potential violation of the sub judice rule, which discourages public comments on the merits of a pending case. Several lawyers and analysts, including journalist Inday Espina-Varona and political scientist Antonio Contreras, pointed to potential violations of the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability (CPRA). Specifically, they cited provisions that prohibit lawyers from knowingly or maliciously disseminating false or unverified statements and engaging in disinformation. They noted that while the Senate can censure Cayetano and refer the matter to its ethics committee, only the Supreme Court has the authority to disbar a lawyer.
