Indonesia Praises Cambodia's Online Scam Crackdown, Stresses International Cooperation

PHNOM PENH, July 30, 2026 (KPT) — Indonesia has praised Cambodia’s crackdown on technology‑based fraud and online scam networks, stressing that international cooperation is vital to tackling a crime that has spread across borders. Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno made the remarks during talks in Phnom Penh on July 28 with Senior Minister Chhay Sinarith, head of the Secretariat for Cambodia’s Commission for Combating Online Scams (CCOS). Arif thanked Cambodia for assisting in the repatriation of Indonesian citizens caught up in fraud cases and welcomed recent operations by Cambodian authorities to dismantle scam rings. He hailed Cambodia’s adoption of the Law on Combating Technology‑Based Fraud as a significant step in strengthening the fight against the crime. He said online scams were a complex global challenge requiring countries to work together to disrupt networks and systems that enable such activities. Indonesia, he added, was ready to support Cambodia through cooperation, including training law enforcement officials and sharing expertise. Arif also confirmed Indonesia’s backing for Cambodia’s plan to host the International Conference on Combating Technology‑Based Fraud in Phnom Penh on September 23‑24. Chhay Sinarith underlined Cambodia’s commitment to eliminating online scams through the CCOS mechanism, new legal frameworks and measures aimed at dismantling criminal networks. He invited Indonesia to join the conference, where countries are expected to exchange experiences and discuss practical steps to strengthen the global response. The two sides also discussed deeper cooperation, including information sharing, training and capacity‑building for specialised officials.
