Cambodia's Information Ministry Vows to Protect Professional Journalists, Resolving 49 Disputes

The Ministry of Information of Cambodia has reiterated its commitment to protecting journalists who adhere to professional ethics and legal frameworks, fulfilling their duties in accordance with the law and journalistic codes of conduct. This initiative aims to enhance journalistic professionalism and promote respect for the law and the value of journalists in Cambodia, according to the ministry's spokesperson. Mr. Tep Sotharith, Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Information, stated that from 2025 to August 2026, the ministry successfully mediated and resolved 49 disputes outside of the court system. These resolutions involved 58 complaints filed against journalists, ultimately protecting 69 individuals from legal prosecution under the Law on the Regime of Media. For the remaining pending cases, the ministry's expert team is continuing its review and intervention efforts. Additionally, the ministry has provided educational guidance and orientation on broadcasting and content creation to approximately 20 journalists and social media content producers, focusing on strengthening ethical standards and professional conduct. Beyond out-of-court dispute resolution, the ministry has also appointed lawyers to provide legal defense in court proceedings. Between 2025 and August 2026, this legal support led to successful outcomes in 7 cases, representing the legal rights and interests of a total of 14 journalists. Furthermore, the ministry continues to intervene in various other cases, both in and out of court, and offers legal consultations to journalists from 33 different media organizations. The ministry welcomes the efforts of media outlets and associations that engage in scientific evaluation, rigorous research, transparency, high professionalism, and genuine accountability. However, the ministry reminds all relevant parties of their significant responsibility concerning the content of their reports. It cautions against the potential negative consequences arising from the publication of reports that lack proper standards, verification, and balanced information, which could adversely affect the media sector and foster societal misunderstandings.
