UN General Assembly Adopts Resolution on Sea Level Rise, Cambodia Emphasizes Coastal Protection

The United Nations General Assembly held a high-level meeting on "Addressing the Existential Threat Posed by Sea Level Rise" at UN Headquarters in New York on September 24, 2026, and adopted a related resolution. San Vannthy, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Environment, delivered a statement, emphasizing the importance of protecting and restoring mangrove forests and coastal wetlands, integrating sea-level rise risks into development plans and infrastructure investments, and facilitating access to finance and technical assistance for developing countries. The adopted resolution acknowledges that rising sea levels are posing real and serious impacts and risks to Small Island Developing States, Least Developed Countries, and coastal and low-lying communities. According to the Ministry of Environment, the resolution sets out four key action directions. First, strengthening science, observation, and data sharing to support risk assessment, early warning, and long-term planning. Second, enhancing adaptation, resilience, and access to finance, especially for developing countries, as well as protecting and restoring mangrove forests, coastal wetlands, and other ecosystems. Third, protecting livelihoods, food and water security, culture, and heritage, while considering the needs of people who may be displaced by the impacts of sea-level rise. Fourth, strengthening international legal clarity regarding maritime domains. This resolution underscores the need for the international community to work together to address the global challenge of sea-level rise. For coastal nations like Cambodia, which are directly affected by climate change, discussions and support within such international frameworks are essential for advancing domestic adaptation measures.
