Cambodia and US Enhance Cooperation on New Technologies to Combat Forest Crimes

Cambodia's Ministry of Environment and the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) have agreed to enhance cooperation in utilizing advanced technologies to combat illegal logging. On August 3, 2026, in Phnom Penh, Minister of Environment Dr. Eang Sophalleth met with Mr. Devineni Udaykiran, Acting Special Agent in Charge of HSI based in Ho Chi Minh City. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in enforcing laws against natural resource crimes, particularly through the use of modern technologies to monitor, investigate, and prevent illegal logging with greater accuracy and effectiveness. Minister Eang Sophalleth emphasized the Cambodian government's firm stance on protecting natural resources. He stated that the Ministry of Environment is taking strict legal measures against all illegal activities related to natural resources, equally and without exception. All cases of violation are compiled and sent to judicial institutions for further proceedings. In addition to legal measures, the Minister highlighted the promotion of the "Environmental Sector Strategy," especially the "Green Angle 2.1" initiative, which focuses on restoring and expanding forest cover. Furthermore, the Ministry of Environment has implemented a modern technology-based monitoring system as a strategy to support efforts in protecting and conserving natural resources more effectively and sustainably. In response, Mr. Devineni Udaykiran praised the efforts and firm measures taken by the Ministry of Environment. He affirmed HSI's commitment to supporting and strengthening cooperation with Cambodia by enhancing technical capabilities and providing advanced technologies to contribute to the fight against natural resource crimes, aiming for sustainable natural resource management. This collaboration aims to address technological challenges in Cambodia's natural resource protection and deepen international partnership between the two countries. The role of technology in monitoring and preventing deforestation is particularly crucial in supporting Cambodia's efforts towards achieving its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
