Laos, Japan Sign Revised US$26.5 Million Agreement to Upgrade Wattay International Airport

The Lao government has revised and signed a US$26.5 million agreement with the Japanese government for the upgrade and expansion of Wattay International Airport in the capital, Vientiane. This agreement aims to modernize and enhance the functionality of Wattay International Airport, a key international gateway for Laos. This project is expected to contribute to economic development by attracting international tourists and promoting trade through the improvement of Laos's aviation infrastructure. Under its one-party system, Laos is pursuing economic growth, with infrastructure development being one of its crucial pillars. In particular, as relations with neighboring China and Vietnam are considered vital in Laos's foreign and economic policies, strengthening the international airport's capabilities will be an indispensable element in deepening cooperation with these countries. This contract revision is a testament to the long-standing cooperative relationship between Laos and Japan, indicating the continuation of Japan's support for Laos through OODA (Official Development Assistance). While Laos's main industries include hydropower, mining, and tourism, underdeveloped infrastructure often poses a bottleneck.
