Laos Strengthens Diplomatic Ties with Israel, Maldives, and Norway

Laos is demonstrating efforts to strengthen its diplomatic relations with Israel, the Maldives, and Norway. On July 29, Vice President Vienthong Siphandone received a farewell courtesy call from Yaron Mayer, Ambassador of the State of Israel to the Lao PDR, at the Presidential Palace, marking the conclusion of Ambassador Mayer's diplomatic mission in Laos. Additionally, on July 23, Mrs Vithaya Xayavong formally presented her credentials to Dr Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of the Maldives, at the President’s Office in Malé, thereby confirming official diplomatic relations between the two nations. On the same day, Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane met with Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide to reaffirm both countries’ commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation. In parallel with these diplomatic activities, Laos is also advancing digitalization within its military sector. The Department of Communications under the General Staff Department of the Ministry of National Defense and the state-owned enterprise Lao-Asia Telecom have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly study, design, and implement digital transformation initiatives for the ministry. Furthermore, the government outlined a broad agenda for August following a review of the country’s socio-economic performance during its Regular Monthly Meeting for July 2026. Key priorities include fiscal management, public security, disaster preparedness, fuel security, infrastructure, and legislative reform. These developments suggest Laos is aiming to deepen international engagement while pursuing domestic stability and development.
