AI Summary

The Thai government aims to become a leading destination for wellness and longevity in Asia within three years, integrating modern medical technology, tourism, and traditional Thai medicine. The upcoming Global Wellness Summit in Phuket in November 2026 is a key opportunity to advance this goal.

Thailand is stepping up its ambitions to become a leading destination for wellness and longevity in Asia within the next three years, by integrating modern medical technology, world-class tourism, and traditional Thai medicine. Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat announced the government's ambitious plan to transform the nation's medical and wellness sector into a major health economy, citing strong infrastructure development as a key driver of growth. The announcement comes ahead of the 2026 Global Wellness Summit, scheduled for Nov 10-13 in Phuket. The event, marking its 20th anniversary, is expected to gather more than 600 participants, including business leaders, doctors, academics, investors, tech innovators, and policymakers. The government anticipates the summit will generate at least 300 million baht in economic value, reinforcing Thailand's role in the global wellness industry. Cathy Feliciano-Chon, co-chair of the summit, noted that Thailand's wellness industry is expanding in line with global growth trends. According to the Global Wellness Institute, the worldwide wellness economy is projected to grow by 7.6% annually between 2024 and 2029, increasing from US$6.8 trillion in 2024 to $9.8 trillion in 2029. This surge is driven by factors such as an ageing population managing chronic diseases, rising consumer demand for longevity and mental resilience, and increased investment in health-focused infrastructure. Asia has emerged as a powerhouse in the wellness sector, representing around $2 trillion of the global market. The region leads with an impressive 31% annual growth rate, outpacing the Middle East and North Africa. In 2024, Asia set a record in wellness tourism with 563 million trips, surpassing Europe's 348 million. Traditional and complementary medicine, wellness tourism, and spas are among the fastest-growing sectors in the region. Thailand has shown remarkable resilience. Despite a pandemic-induced contraction in wellness revenue from $41.7 billion in 2019 to $31 billion in 2020, the market rebounded to $39 billion in 2023 and $43 billion in 2024. This rapid recovery ranks Thailand as the ninth-largest wellness market in Asia-Pacific.
