Vietnam, Russia Boost Military Training Cooperation

Vietnam and Russia are set to further strengthen their cooperation in the military training sector. During a meeting in Hanoi with Sen. Lt. Gen. Vladimir Borisovich Zarudnitsky, Director of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of National Defence Sen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Truong Thang emphasized that training cooperation, in particular, has been a highlight of bilateral relations. This move to enhance cooperation is situated within the broader context of Vietnam-Russia relations entering a new phase in recent years, with stronger and more extensive cooperation. Both nations have also agreed on major orientations for advancing their relations, with military ties forming one of the key pillars. Vietnam, under its one-party system, pursues its own foreign policy, and deepening relations with specific countries carries strategic intent. Military cooperation with Russia can serve as a means for Vietnam to bolster its defense capabilities and maintain its regional influence. Furthermore, for Vietnam, which has a complex relationship with China, cooperation with Russia is also seen as important for maintaining geopolitical balance. As Vietnam continues its economic growth, it also focuses on military modernization, with Russia having been a key supplier of arms and equipment to Vietnam for many years. The reinforcement of training cooperation this time is expected to go beyond mere technical exchange, potentially leading to improved military interoperability and a stronger foundation for future security collaboration between the two countries.
