Heavy Rains Cause Flooding in Pailin Province, Residents Evacuated Amidst Official Warnings

Continuous heavy rainfall in Cambodia's western Pailin Province has caused river levels to rise to dangerous heights, leading to the flooding of residential areas. On the night of September 24, 2026, Pailin Provincial Governor Dr. Ban Sreymom, who also chairs the Provincial Disaster Management Committee, inspected the flood situation with a team of experts and local authorities to ensure the timely rescue and safety of residents. Several villages in Stung Treng commune, Salak Kroum district, particularly in the Tub and other villages, have been inundated, resulting in damage to crops, household items, livestock, and some infrastructure. Governor Ban stated that as the rain is expected to continue, she has instructed local authorities to collaborate with the Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology to study and identify locations for water drainage, especially if the flood situation worsens. She also urged residents living along rivers and downstream to exercise extreme caution, report any issues immediately to local authorities, and to prioritize their health and hygiene to prevent the spread of diseases. Pailin Province is regularly affected by flash floods each year when heavy rains fall on the northern slopes of the Cardamom Mountains. Currently, provincial authorities at all levels, the Provincial Disaster Management Committee, the Provincial Red Cross Branch, and youth from the Cambodia Youth Union are prepared to assess the impact on affected citizens and facilitate timely rescue efforts.
