Tonle Sap Lake: Joint Forces Vow Renewed Crackdown on Illegal Fishing
Cambodia's Commander-in-Chief led a progress review meeting for the crackdown on illegal fishing in the Tonle Sap Lake region. Participants shared achievements from the past 18 months and reaffirmed plans to intensify confiscation of illegal fishing gear and legal action against poachers.
Phnom Penh: General Vong Pisen, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, presided over a meeting on June 29, 2026, at the provincial meeting hall of Pursat, to review the progress and set future directions for the campaign to prevent and suppress all types of illegal fishing within the Tonle Sap Lake region. The meeting was held under the high approval of Prime Minister Hun Manet. Attendees included General Mao Sophann, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Army, leaders from relevant ministries and institutions, governors of the five provinces surrounding Tonle Sap Lake, and commanders of all types of armed forces, to jointly discuss and resolve pressing issues. During the meeting, General Vong Pisen heard a summary report on the work accomplished over the past 18 months. It was reported that the joint forces, with the military leading the command unit for suppressing illegal fishing and the local authorities, have actively cooperated with citizens in patrolling, apprehending offenders, and confiscating and destroying numerous illegal fishing gears. This has led to the populace praising the results of the suppression efforts, noting that fish stocks have rebounded. In his remarks and summary, the Commander-in-Chief expressed his admiration and high appreciation for the efforts of the joint forces, the provincial authorities of the five provinces, and relevant officials who have actively collaborated to successfully protect the nation's valuable natural and aquatic resources. To further strengthen the effectiveness of this work, General Vong Pisen laid out strict measures and future work directions, including: 1. Absolute adherence to government orders: Support and implement the orders of Prime Minister Hun Manet to prevent and suppress illegal fishing, logging, and land encroachment. 2. All relevant forces must jointly investigate and suppress illegal activities, build case files, and submit offenders for legal prosecution. 3. Educate citizens about the Fisheries Law to encourage their participation in preventing and suppressing illegal activities. 4. Continue to investigate and confiscate illegal fishing gears such as electrofishing devices and fine-mesh nets. 5. All forces must implement this order with solidarity, determination, and conscience. Furthermore, the Commander-in-Chief emphasized that no involvement or protection from any official or force with offenders will be tolerated. Any involvement or collusion found will be subject to military discipline and legal penalties.
