The Philippine Coast Guard arrested two fishermen in Cajidiocan, Romblon for allegedly using a compressor to catch fish underwater, a method violating local ordinances.
CALAPAN CITY — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) apprehended two fishermen who were allegedly engaged in illegal fishing using a compressor as an underwater breathing apparatus off Barangay Danao in Cajidiocan, Romblon. The Search and Rescue (SAR) Team of Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Cajidiocan spotted the suspicious motorbanca on its way back to its sub-station after searching for missing fishermen amid unfavorable weather conditions. The team approached the boat and found the two fishermen, both residents of Barangay Cambalo in Cajidiocan, allegedly using a compressor while underwater to catch fish. The PCG said the fishing method violated Municipal Ordinance No. 03-11, Section 67, or the Comprehensive Fishery Ordinance of Cajidiocan. The fishermen were informed of the alleged violation and apprised of their constitutional rights. Confiscated during the operation were a motorized fishing boat and engine, compressor engine, aluminum air tank compressor, a pair of flippers, spear guns, about 100 meters of hose, 15 kilograms of assorted fish, goggles and a flashlight. The fishermen were placed under the Coast Guard’s temporary custody while the confiscated items were properly secured. The PCG said the boat and other confiscated items would be turned over to the Cajidiocan Municipal Agriculture Office for appropriate administrative action.
