A 20-meter section of the north-west terrace of Angkor Wat is undergoing restoration and structural reinforcement according to technical standards by experts from the Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap (APSARA). This marks the ninth phase of a project that began in 2013, with a total of 183 meters slated for restoration.
A 20-meter section of the north-west terrace of the Angkor Wat temple complex is currently undergoing restoration and structural reinforcement. The work is being carried out by a team of experts from the Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap (APSARA) in accordance with strict technical standards, according to information shared on the APSARA Facebook page on July 17. Ms. Nong Boravy, an archaeologist at APSARA, stated that this is the ninth phase of the project to restore the north-west terrace of Angkor Wat, which began in 2013. Annually, APSARA, through its Department of Conservation of Monuments and Archaeology, implements phased restoration projects, each covering a 20-meter section, with the aim of enhancing the value and aesthetic appeal of the terrace. As of 2026, a total of 183 meters have been restored. The ninth phase of the restoration project commenced in mid-2026 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Ms. Nong Boravy explained that the damage to the terrace is attributed to its age and a lack of maintenance during past conflicts, which has led to the deterioration of its foundation and the collapse of upper stone elements, resulting in the loss of its original structure. Additionally, vegetation and large trees growing along the terrace pose a risk by pushing and separating the stones from their original form. The restoration work involves dismantling and repairing stones, constructing retaining walls, compacting soil, and reassembling stones according to their original configuration. The terrace is constructed with seven tiers of sandstone at the base and three tiers of laterite stone above. Ms. Nong Boravy expressed optimism that upon completion, the restored terrace will further enhance the beauty of Angkor Wat, attracting more tourists to visit and take photographs.
