Indonesia's KAI to Launch Luxury Tourist Train 'Nusantara Explorer'

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI is set to launch the luxury tourist train 'Nusantara Explorer' soon. However, the train, which was once tested by President Prabowo Subianto, will not serve regular routes. KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that the 'Nusantara Explorer' train is not allocated for regular service. Instead, it will be operated specifically for the tourism segment through charter schemes or open trips. 'The Nusantara Explorer train will have its commercial launch. However, I can convey that it is not for regular service, but can be used for open trips or chartered, similar to other tourist trains,' said Anne during a press conference at KRL BNI City Station on Friday (4/9/2026). Anne revealed that the train will combine accommodation, culinary experiences, and exploration of tourist destinations simultaneously. Passengers can enjoy long-distance journeys without needing to change accommodation. To this end, KAI is currently finalizing the preparation of several carriages to complete the entire 'Nusantara Explorer' train set before its official introduction to the public. 'Actually, there are still several carriages being prepared, so within one set, there are still cars being prepared. The Nusantara Explorer will indeed be similar to a cruise ship. So, rest on the train, have dinner on the train, then stop at several tourist locations, and then move again,' explained Anne. Regarding the specific launch date for the 'Nusantara Explorer' train, Anne could not provide certainty. However, she promised to announce it officially once all technical preparations and the commercial launch are declared ready. 'This is being prepared for its commercial launch. Commercial information will definitely be conveyed soon,' said Anne.
