Cambodia Reaffirms Longstanding Partnership with Japan on Landmine Action

Deputy Prime Minister Ly Thuch, First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action Authority (CMAA), stated that Japan is a "crucial and long-standing partner" for Cambodia in the field of mine action, recognizing its continuous support. This was affirmed during a working meeting on September 15, 2026, with Mr. Daisuke Namioka, Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. Deputy Prime Minister Ly Thuch expressed gratitude to the Japanese government and people for their assistance in Cambodia's path towards peace, development, and particularly in mine action. He considered Japan a vital and enduring partner in mitigating the impact of landmines and explosive remnants of war. Cambodia and Japan previously served as chair and host of the 5th Review Conference of the Ottawa Treaty in 2024, contributing to strengthened international cooperation and Cambodia's commitment to a mine-free world. Regarding cluster munitions, the Deputy Prime Minister reiterated Cambodia's stance, fully supporting the humanitarian goals and implementation of the Convention on Cluster Munitions, despite Cambodia being only an observer state. The country will continue to work with the international community to prevent and reduce the impact of these weapons on civilians. Mr. Daisuke Namioka affirmed the close ties between Cambodia and Japan and Japan's commitment to continue implementing the National Policy on Mine Action 2026-2035. He also pledged continued support for demining and cluster munition clearance efforts in Cambodia.
