Union Minister U Min Naung of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation stated that efforts are being made to achieve a 3.4% growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the 2026-27 fiscal year. This was stated by the Union Minister during a special interview program with state-owned media regarding the development of the agriculture and livestock sector. As the country's economy is based on the agricultural sector, it was stated that GDP grew by 1.9% in the 2025-26 fiscal year, and efforts are being made to achieve a 3.4% growth in the 2026-27 fiscal year. The ministry aims to promote sustainable agricultural production systems that are internationally competitive, thereby ensuring food security and a nutritious diet, improving the socio-economic conditions of rural people, and supporting the country's economic development. In particular, Union Minister U Min Naung stated that plans are being made to transform farmers from producers to agricultural business entrepreneurs. It is known that the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation has formulated nine key policies related to agriculture and livestock, taking the directives of the Head of State as policy guidance. The Union Minister also stated that efforts are being focused on ensuring food security for the entire nation, providing nutritious food for the people, ensuring food safety, achieving target yields for major crops, ensuring sufficient domestic edible oil, and increasing farmers' income through increased per-acre yields. Furthermore, the Union Minister stated that the ministry is focusing on assisting farmers in agriculture and livestock to ensure they have sufficient seeds and animal breeds, to improve farmland, to ensure sufficient animal feed, to ensure sufficient water for agricultural and livestock activities, and to enable them to acquire and utilize technology. He also mentioned that in educating farmers, they are not only providing general knowledge but also calculating how it will benefit the farmers and then providing that education.
