China's Claims in Natuna Waters; Experts Urge Indonesia to Defend Sovereignty

Indonesian experts are calling for a firm defense of national sovereignty amidst China's claims in the waters surrounding the Natuna Islands, off the coast of Indonesia. This maritime area is of utmost importance to Indonesia due to its abundant natural resources and strategic location. China claims parts of these waters as falling under its jurisdiction based on its "nine-dash line" in the South China Sea. However, Indonesia, in accordance with international law, asserts that the Natuna Islands and their surrounding waters are part of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf, and does not recognize China's claims. Experts are urging the Indonesian government to resolutely protect its sovereignty through diplomatic means, as well as by enhancing its maritime presence and law enforcement capabilities. In the past, issues such as interference by Chinese official vessels with Indonesian fishing boats and illegal fishing within Indonesian fishing waters have been raised, suggesting the continuation of these tensions.
