Thai Network Opposes $7.2 Billion Dam Project, Citing Forest and Elephant Habitat Risks

In Chonburi Province, central Thailand, the "Klong Wang Thong Reservoir Construction Opposition Network," comprised of local residents and environmental groups, has announced its refusal to accept the planned "Klong Wang Thong Reservoir Construction Project," estimated to cost 7.2 billion baht (approximately $200 million). The network warns that if the project proceeds, approximately 12,000 rai (about 19.2 square kilometers) of forest land will be submerged, severely impacting the habitat of 74 elephants, an endangered species. While the reservoir construction is intended to mitigate flooding and secure water for agriculture, opponents argue that the environmental impact assessment is insufficient and fails to adequately consider the long-term risks to community life and the ecosystem.
