South Cotabato LGUs Suspend Classes to Review School Security After Shooting Incident

Several local government units (LGUs) in South Cotabato have suspended face-to-face classes on Monday, September 21, as schools review safety and security measures following the shooting at Banga National High School (BNHS) last Friday. The local governments of Banga, Lake Sebu, Tantangan, Norala, Sto. Niño and Surallah, as well as Koronadal City, are implementing this measure to thoroughly assess current safety and security protocols within school premises and to enhance the protection of students and staff. This decision underscores the heightened concerns regarding safety in educational environments, a persistent challenge in the Philippines, especially in regions where the development of infrastructure and security systems can differ significantly. The incident is expected to spur the implementation of more effective safety measures. Education officials in South Cotabato, in coordination with the LGUs, plan to strengthen measures to prevent unauthorized entry into schools, review the status of security camera installations, and revise emergency evacuation drills. They also intend to improve information sharing with local residents and parents to restore confidence in school safety.
