Chinese National Dies After Falling Through Roof in Phnom Penh Market

A tragic accident occurred on the morning of September 20, 2026, at a Chinese market located near the entrance to Koh Pich (Imperial Island) in Tonle Bassac commune, Chamkarmon district, Phnom Penh. A Chinese national in his 50s fell through the roof and died. The deceased was a Chinese national in his 50s who owned and operated a Chinese restaurant within the market. According to eyewitnesses, the man had climbed onto the roof to inspect ventilation ducts that were not functioning properly. While on the roof, he stepped on a rotten section, causing him to fall through to the ground below. He sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the incident, local authorities, in collaboration with technical experts from the Forensics and Scientific Evidence Office of the Phnom Penh Municipal Police, arrived at the scene to examine the body. The remains were subsequently handed over to his relatives for traditional funeral rites. This incident highlights the critical importance of maintaining aging infrastructure in commercial areas like markets and underscores the safety concerns for foreign residents and business owners operating in the country.
