Indonesia Issues Heavy Rain and Strong Wind Warnings for 14 Regions

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) urges the public to be aware of the potential for moderate to heavy rain and strong winds in a number of regions in Indonesia on Wednesday, September 23. Moderate to heavy rain potential is predicted to occur in Aceh, West Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bengkulu, Lampung, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, Papua Mountains, and Papua. Meanwhile, North Sumatra and Central Papua are in the alert category for the potential for heavy to very heavy rain. BMKG did not record areas that were included in the warning category for the potential for very heavy to extreme rain. In addition to heavy rain, the public is also asked to be aware of the potential for strong winds in a number of areas. This condition can increase the risk of trees falling, disruption of travel, and danger for community activities in open areas, coastal areas, and waters. The areas that are potentially experiencing strong winds include East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, and South Papua. BMKG appeals to the public in areas that are potentially experiencing extreme weather to continue to monitor the development of weather forecasts and early warnings through BMKG's official information channels. The public is also asked to increase vigilance against the impact of bad weather, including fallen trees, high waves, and disruptions in travel. Caution is especially needed when doing outdoor activities or traveling in areas that are potentially experiencing heavy rain and strong winds.
