Cambodia's forests are not merely green canopies but multi-layered ecosystems nurturing diverse life from the canopy to the soil. Understanding this structure is crucial for recognizing the true value of forests and implementing sustainable conservation measures. The upper layer of the forest, the canopy, directly receives sunlight and is where active photosynthesis occurs. Below this, smaller trees and shrubs grow, relying on dappled sunlight. Further down, vegetation, fallen leaves, deadwood, and soil each form distinct layers supporting different life forms. This vertical diversity provides unique habitats and food sources for a wide array of organisms, including birds, insects, ground-dwelling mammals, and even fungi and microorganisms deep within the soil. Particularly noteworthy is the forest soil. Fallen leaves and deadwood, while appearing disordered, are essential in natural forests for nutrient cycling through decomposition and serve as shelters for many creatures. This soil layer represents another world of life, where roots, soil organisms, water, air, and minerals interact. Excessive trampling or the use of heavy machinery can cause severe damage to this hidden stratum. The multi-layered structure of forests also offers insights into the organization of society. Just as a society gains strength when leaders, caregivers, workers, educators, artists, farmers, children, and elders collaborate and respect each other, forest conservation requires protecting all layers of the ecosystem—the canopy, undergrowth, soil, and their interactions. In forest restoration, this "layered vision" is also important. Planting only tall trees can lead to overlooking the understory plants and soil communities. True forest restoration requires time, natural processes, and consideration for the entire ecosystem structure specific to that forest. In the Cambodian context, forests are not just natural resources but living systems with inherent biodiversity and cultural value.
