Security is Key to Resolving Thai-Cambodia Border Dispute, Says Thai FM

Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow has stated that security measures are the top priority for resolving the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia. While expressing a preference for direct negotiations, Phuangketkeow acknowledged Thailand's acceptance of UNCLOS conciliation proceedings. However, he stressed that no technical or legal process can be separated from ground realities. According to the minister, fulfilling security commitments – including upholding the ceasefire, reducing military risks, demining, strengthening law enforcement, and cooperating against criminal networks – is a prerequisite for advancing border demarcation work. Phuangketkeow highlighted the repeated injuries to Thai soldiers from landmines along the border, including incidents involving newly laid mines. He asserted that joint demining is a practical prerequisite for constructive talks. The minister also identified transnational crime, particularly large-scale scam networks, as a threat to border security. Thailand's efforts to rescue domestic and foreign victims and enhance information sharing are seen as crucial for establishing a foundation for peaceful border dispute resolution. He noted that these security concerns are reflected in the Joint Statement agreed upon by both sides on December 27, 2025, and emphasized the importance of its implementation. Phuangketkeow also underscored the necessity of adhering to international law and fulfilling all obligations, not just those that are convenient. Ultimately, he concluded that concrete steps to reduce risks and protect communities, rather than public posturing or legal theatrics, will lead to a durable settlement.
