World Mangrove Day: Indonesian Government and Forestry Companies Push for Sustainable Management

On the occasion of World Mangrove Day on July 26th, the Indonesian government, in conjunction with forestry-related companies (APHI), is strongly advocating for the promotion of sustainable management of mangrove forests. This initiative aims to harmonize the conservation of Indonesia's vast mangrove ecosystems with the local communities and economic activities that depend on them. Mangrove forests play a variety of crucial roles, including preventing coastal erosion, maintaining biodiversity, and acting as carbon sinks. To preserve and enhance these functions, planned management, with local communities at the forefront, is essential, not just protection. APHI plans to explore concrete methods for passing on the ecosystem services of mangrove forests to future generations, based on the principles of sustainable forest management, balancing logging and reforestation. The government also aims to support these private sector efforts and build a sustainable mangrove management system through legal reforms and investment in technological development.
