Cambodia Promotes 'Made in Cambodia' Souvenirs as Cultural Ambassadors

SIEM REAP, July 31, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia is seeking to turn locally made handicrafts and souvenirs into “cultural ambassadors” that showcase national identity abroad while boosting income for artisans, officials said Thursday. Tourism Minister Huot Hak told the First National Forum on Promoting Tourism Handicrafts and Khmer Souvenirs that souvenirs should be seen as more than commercial products, describing them as a tool of “tourism diplomacy” to project Cambodia’s heritage and craftsmanship to international visitors. The forum in Siem Reap drew around 500 participants, including government officials, tourism businesses, associations and artisans, to link cultural preservation with tourism and local economic growth. A Business Matching programme connected communities directly with buyers and distributors such as hotels, tour operators and retailers. Hak said the initiative could strengthen supply chains, expand market access and improve opportunities for Cambodian artisans. He stressed the importance of product storytelling to add value, allowing tourists to understand the origins and cultural significance of items they purchase. Producers were urged to maintain Khmer identity while raising quality and standards. Hak highlighted trademark registration and Geographical Indication certification as tools to protect artisans, build consumer confidence and prevent counterfeits. The government sees authentic “Made in Cambodia” souvenirs as a way to preserve heritage, create jobs and promote the country’s image internationally through tourism diplomacy.
