Cambodia Reaffirms Peaceful Approach to Border Dispute with Thailand
Cambodia's Senate President reaffirmed the nation's commitment to peacefully resolving border issues with Thailand in accordance with international law, expressing gratitude for ASEAN's mediation efforts during a meeting with the Malaysian Chief of Defence Forces.
Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to resolving border issues with Thailand through peaceful means and in accordance with international law. The reaffirmation came during a courtesy call by Chief of Malaysian Defence Forces H.E. Gen. Tan Sri Dato' Seri Haji Malek Razak bin Sulaiman at the Senate’s Solidarity Palace on the morning of July 11, according to Senate Spokesperson H.E. Chea Thyrith. During the meeting, Samdech Techo welcomed the Malaysian Chief of Defence Forces and described his visit as a contribution to strengthening the longstanding friendship and defence cooperation between Cambodia and Malaysia. He also congratulated H.E. Gen. Malek Razak on his appointment as Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces. The Senate President expressed appreciation to Malaysian Prime Minister H.E. Anwar Ibrahim for his active role, during Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship, in supporting efforts to resolve the Cambodia-Thailand border issue. He noted that the establishment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) remains an important legacy of Malaysia's chairmanship. Samdech Techo also briefed H.E. Gen. Malek Razak on recent developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border, reiterating Cambodia's consistent position of seeking a peaceful settlement based on international law. For his part, the Malaysian Chief of Defence Forces praised the strong bilateral relations between Cambodia and Malaysia, particularly in defence cooperation, and said he had discussed ways to further strengthen military ties with Cambodia's Ministry of National Defence. He also commended Samdech Techo's leadership in transforming Cambodia from a war-torn country into one of peace and development, and expressed support for Cambodia's peaceful approach to resolving the border issue with Thailand.
