Vietnam to Strictly Handle Improper Benefits from Old Retirement Regimes

Vietnam's Ministry of Interior has issued a directive to ministries, sectors, and localities nationwide, demanding a thorough review of individuals who retired under the old Decree 178. Vu Chien Thang, the Deputy Minister of Interior, clearly stated that strict action will be taken against any confirmed cases of improper benefits after the review is completed. This measure can be interpreted as part of the anti-corruption campaign promoted by the Communist Party of Vietnam. Under the one-party system, the transparency of public fund management and execution is always a public concern, and the government aims to maintain public trust by demonstrating a firm stance against corrupt practices. Especially as the economy continues to grow, the proper allocation of public funds is essential for social stability. In the past, cases of improper benefit claims and inappropriate operations within social security and civil servant retirement systems have been criticized, leading the government to revise systems and strengthen oversight to address these issues. The current move concerning Decree 178 is seen as part of these ongoing efforts. While Vietnam has strong economic ties with China, it also faces geopolitical tensions, particularly over issues like the South China Sea. In this context, stabilizing the nation's socio-economic foundation is one of the most critical tasks of governance.
