Vietnam Leverages Science for Fallen Soldiers' Remains Recovery

Science and technology are playing an increasingly important role in the search and identification of fallen soldiers' remains in Vietnam. In particular, next-generation gene sequencing technologies have opened new possibilities by significantly improving the ability to identify severely degraded DNA samples. Party General Secretary and State President To Lam stressed that every set of remains recovered represents far more than a technical achievement. It marks the return of a son or daughter to the Fatherland and to his/her family, the restoration of a missing chapter of history, and a reaffirmation of the country's enduring tradition of remembering those who served the nation. In a document issued by the Standing Board of the VBS Executive Council on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947–2026), the Sangha urged its central committees and institutes, as well as its chapters in provinces and cities, to hold requiem ceremonies in memory of heroic martyrs and join efforts to support the nationwide campaign. The program was a profoundly significant political communication event, reflecting the care and responsibility of the Party, State, military and society towards the search, recovery and identification of fallen soldiers' remains. It also expressed the deep gratitude of today's generation to the martyrs who sacrificed their youth for national independence, freedom and peace and happiness. For bereaved families, this represents the fulfillment of a long-held wish for the return of their loved ones' remains, providing closure to a missing chapter of their family history. Vietnam continues to pursue such humanitarian efforts to heal the wounds of past wars and deepen national unity.
