Lao Cai Province Enhances Disaster Preparedness with Evacuation Drills

Bat Xat commune in Lao Cai province, northern Vietnam, conducted a civil defense drill on August 3rd, aimed at enhancing preparedness for flash floods, landslides, and inundation anticipated in 2026. The exercise seeks to improve the leadership and command capabilities of local authorities, as well as the coordination among various forces, to proactively manage potential natural disaster situations within the area. Lao Cai province has experienced frequent damage from heavy rainfall in recent years, necessitating the urgent relocation of residents from areas prone to landslides. For instance, on July 20th, flash flood and landslide warnings were issued for Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang, and Lao Cai provinces. Heavy rains also caused power outages affecting over 9,000 customers. In light of these events, efforts to bolster the resilience of local communities against disasters are being prioritized. Vietnam's geography makes it susceptible to natural disasters, particularly typhoons, floods, and landslides. The Vietnamese government, operating under a one-party system, is focusing on infrastructure development and disaster prevention measures alongside economic growth to protect the lives and property of its citizens. This drill is part of a broader initiative to assess the practical execution capabilities of local disaster response plans under central government directives. Enhancing disaster response capabilities in Lao Cai province, a border region with China, is also considered to contribute to regional stability.
