INTERPOL Confirms Effectiveness of Cambodia's Online Scam Crackdown

The International Criminal Police Organization, INTERPOL, has confirmed that Cambodia's crackdown campaign against online scams is proving effective. According to the organization, the measures are forcing criminal networks to relocate from large hubs to smaller, more difficult-to-track centers. Nicholas Court, Head of Operational Coordination at INTERPOL, stated at an international conference on combating online fraud in Phnom Penh that Cambodia has demonstrated "special efforts" and "remarkable progress." He also noted the enactment of a new law in Cambodia, passed in April, which further empowers Cambodian authorities in their fight against fraud. "We have seen that the scamming hubs, especially in this region, are increasingly moving from large centers to many smaller centers that are difficult to track," Court explained. "But what tells us is that the law enforcement efforts are having an impact here." However, Court cautioned that fraud remains one of the world's largest forms of crime, with global annual losses estimated at over $440 billion. INTERPOL has recorded a more than 50% increase in scam cases over the past two years, along with a rise in arrests, victim numbers, and financial losses. The impact extends beyond financial losses, damaging businesses, government revenue, and individual livelihoods, Court highlighted. To bolster its response, INTERPOL has launched Task Force Shadow Storm in Singapore, bringing together investigators from multiple countries and private intelligence to dismantle scam hubs and protect victims. To date, nearly 70,000 bank accounts have been frozen, and over $600 million has been recovered in two major operations, with thousands of suspects arrested. "The threat from scams is high. The threat from scams continues to grow," Court added, emphasizing the need for law enforcement agencies to keep pace with criminal networks. INTERPOL will support the declaration to be made at this international conference, underscoring the necessity of strategic commitment synchronized with cooperation.
