‘#NoToBSKEPostponement’ Sparks Pushback Against Bid to Delay Philippine Polls

Calls for the government to refrain from postponing the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) scheduled for November have surfaced online amid proposals to delay the polls. The hashtag ‘#NoToBSKEPostponement’ has gained traction, signaling growing public opposition. Representative Niko Raul Daza of Northern Samar has filed a House bill seeking to postpone the BSKE again, moving it from its scheduled date to November 2028. Daza cited the need to conserve government funds amid the ongoing energy crisis and rising costs of basic commodities. He argued that the postponement would allow the government to prioritize financial resources for pressing national concerns. However, Nestie Villaviray, founder of the Model Sangguniang Kabataan Network, expressed strong disagreement, stating that the postponement would add stress and anxiety to youth leaders who are already weary of the “toxicity” in Philippine politics and are looking forward to the end of their terms. Villaviray criticized the move as a tactic by those seeking to protect a “rotten system,” aiming to erode the idealism of young leaders and discourage them from public service. He warned that such a delay would kill the “momentum, drive and the hope” carried by a new generation of youth leaders ready to serve. Furthermore, the National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) has also voiced its firm opposition to the proposed delay. NAMFREL emphasized that regular and predictable leadership cycles are the ultimate check and balance in Philippine grassroots governance. The group pointed out that BSKE has already been the most frequently postponed democratic exercise in the country’s history, and each additional delay normalizes legislating around the electorate rather than submitting to it. While acknowledging the economic pressures cited by proponents, NAMFREL believes that proceeding with the BSKE as scheduled is more compelling than another postponement. Separately, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced its intention to request President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to declare November 3, 2026, a holiday. This move is intended to facilitate voting for citizens who may need to travel to their home provinces to cast their ballots on election day.
