Hanoi Launches 'Flooding Map' Mini App to Combat Heavy Rains

Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, has introduced a 'Flooding Map' mini application on the 'iHanoi' digital platform for citizens to enhance its response capabilities to heavy rainfall incidents, exacerbated by recent extreme weather events. Developed by the Hanoi Department of Science and Technology, the app is expected to contribute to public safety and damage mitigation. A key feature of this mini app is its real-time update capability for rainfall and flood conditions. It directly accesses data from automated monitoring stations managed by the Hanoi Drainage Company, instantly sending alerts to users' smartphones. This allows citizens to check rainfall and water depth before traveling, enabling them to avoid dangerous areas. Vietnam has seen an increasing trend of heavy rainfall damage, particularly in urban areas, due to rapid urbanization and climate change impacts. Hanoi is no exception, with widespread flooding occurring during heavy downpours, causing traffic disruptions and impacting public life. The launch of the 'Flooding Map' mini app is a concrete technological measure to address these challenges. This initiative is also part of the 'Digital Nation' construction promoted by the Communist Party of Vietnam, aiming to improve administrative efficiency and the quality of public life through digital technologies. This approach reflects a significant aspect of governance under a one-party system. Furthermore, while maintaining economic ties with China, strengthening domestic infrastructure and disaster prevention measures can be interpreted as part of Vietnam's efforts to uphold national sovereignty and ensure the stability of its citizens' lives.
