Battambang: Village Chief Found Dead in Pond, Motorcycle Missing; Authorities Investigate

In Battambang province, western Cambodia, a village chief was found dead in a pond last weekend, with his motorcycle missing from the scene. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Chhuong Kimsong, deputy chief of the Battambang Provincial Police in charge of criminal affairs, told Koh Santepheap on the morning of September 14 that the body of the village chief, Heng Vanna, was discovered in a pond in the middle of a rice field. However, the motorcycle he was riding was missing from the scene, and the authorities are currently investigating. According to technical officials who examined the body, there were no signs of violence. However, minor fish-biting marks were observed on the face. The fact that the body was found in the water and the motorcycle was missing has raised suspicions of foul play. Mr. Heng Vanna, the victim, was the chief of Dak Saro village in O'Mal commune. He had been missing since around 6 a.m. on September 12, having left home on his motorcycle. His family stated that he had a cup of coffee before leaving and told them he was going to check on fish he had set in a pond in the rice field, the scene of the incident. When he did not return home by noon, his child rode a motorcycle to search for him at the location he had gone to. Upon arriving at the destination, the child could not find the victim. It was not until 1:30 p.m. that day that his shoes were found near the edge of the pond. Looking into the pond, which was about knee-deep, his body was discovered. His motorcycle was not found at the scene, prompting an immediate alert to the authorities. Based on the circumstances at the scene, many members of the public have concluded that it was a "robbery-homicide." This conclusion is based on the victim being found "dead in the water" and his motorcycle missing from the scene, with only a pair of shoes left near the pond's edge. Villagers who went to see the body of the village chief all expressed suspicion of "robbery-homicide." However, the authorities have not yet made a conclusion similar to the villagers' assertions. The police are focusing on the victim's health, noting the absence of any external injuries on the body. They reason that if it were a "robbery-homicide," there might be signs of a struggle. Yet, the public questions: if it was not a robbery-homicide, where did the victim's motorcycle go? (This is a question without an answer, or no one to answer it). Nevertheless, regarding this case, Deputy Police Chief Chhuong Kimsong stated that while they have not yet made any assessment of the victim's death, he is leading the investigation team in continuing to conduct research.
