Cambodia-China Deepen Ties, Leaders Reaffirm 'Iron Friendship'

Cambodia and China have confirmed that their bilateral relations are becoming increasingly close. China regards its relationship with Cambodia as one of its diplomatic priorities. This was revealed during the bilateral meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Chinese Premier Li Qiang in China on July 16, 2026. Cambodian government spokesperson Pen Bona stated that the two countries frequently exchange visits and opinions at all levels and in all sectors, reflecting the robustness of their relationship and the continuous progress of their cooperation. Premier Li Qiang referred to Cambodia as an 'iron friend' nation and emphasized that both countries will jointly promote their respective modernizations and address global uncertainties through mutual support. In response, Prime Minister Hun Manet highly praised the progress in Cambodia-China relations, stating that the two countries are comprehensive strategic partners and 'iron friends' jointly building a 'Cambodia-China community of shared future for all seasons in the new era.' The Prime Minister reiterated Cambodia's unwavering adherence to the 'One China' principle, considering issues related to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and Tibet as China's internal affairs. The leaders also discussed new initiatives and directions aimed at further deepening cooperation in key areas such as politics and diplomacy, economy and trade, infrastructure connectivity, green energy, agriculture, defense and security, and people-to-people exchanges, especially tourism and education. Furthermore, Prime Minister Hun Manet briefed the Chinese side on the evolving situation at the Cambodia-Thailand border, emphasizing Cambodia's commitment and stance to resolve border issues peacefully and legally, in accordance with existing treaties, agreements, and understandings between the two countries.
