Cambodia Pursues High-Value, Green Manufacturing Amid MinebeaMitsumi's Major Expansion

TOKYO, Sept 15, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia is accelerating its push toward higher‑value, technology‑intensive and environmentally sustainable manufacturing, officials said Tuesday, as Japanese precision manufacturer MinebeaMitsumi announced plans to invest an additional $600 million to $700 million in the Kingdom over the next decade. The investment was highlighted during a meeting between Cambodian Ambassador to Japan Chum Sounry and MinebeaMitsumi Chairman and CEO Yoshihisa Kainuma at the company’s Tokyo headquarters. The two sides discussed expanding cooperation in advanced manufacturing, technology, human‑resource development and green production. The new capital would build on about $1.9 billion already invested in Cambodia over the past 15 years, underscoring the company’s long‑term confidence in the Kingdom as a production base. The expansion is expected to support MinebeaMitsumi’s growing operation in Pursat province, where more than 400 workers are employed. Ambassador Sounry welcomed the company’s continued expansion, saying its presence was helping diversify Cambodia’s industrial base beyond Phnom Penh while creating jobs and opportunities in the provinces. He stressed the need to train more engineers, technicians and skilled workers to support Cambodia’s industrial transformation, encouraging internships, scholarships and technical exchanges. Green manufacturing was also a focus, with Sounry praising MinebeaMitsumi’s renewable‑energy initiatives and expressing Cambodia’s interest in expanding environmentally sustainable production. The expansion comes as Cambodia seeks to strengthen its position in precision manufacturing and technology‑related industries, including electronics, appliances and vehicle components. The government has emphasized moving beyond traditional labour‑intensive industries toward sectors that generate greater value, technology transfer and skilled employment. The embassy reaffirmed its readiness to facilitate dialogue between MinebeaMitsumi and Cambodian institutions to support the company’s continued growth, reflecting broader Cambodia–Japan economic cooperation.
