Vietnam's Wood Sector Faces Bottlenecks in Sustainable Development
Vietnam's wood and wood product sector, a key export industry targeting $17.2 billion in 2025, faces critical challenges in meeting sustainable development requirements to maintain its global market position. Addressing these demands, including certifications for European markets and navigating trade with China, is paramount for continued growth.
The wood and wood product sector remains one of Vietnam's key export industries, with export turnover of timber and wood products expected to reach about $17.2 billion by 2025. However, meeting sustainable development requirements is no longer optional but a mandatory condition for Vietnamese wooden furniture and wood products to retain their position in global supply chains. The final months of the year, when consumers typically renovate and redecorate their homes in preparation for the New Year, provide a significant boost in export orders for the wood industry. There is also growing interest from international buyers such as Argentina's Cordillera Brewing, which is seeking Vietnamese suppliers for products like cashew nuts, black pepper, cinnamon, star anise, spices, natural rubber, rattan and bamboo products, handicrafts, and a range of processed food products. China's trade with Vietnam reached CNY 305.6 billion, a year-on-year increase of 28.3%, representing 83.9% of the total trade turnover through the border gate, highlighting the importance of the Chinese market. However, to meet the stringent standards of markets like Europe, obtaining sustainability certifications is crucial. Experts emphasize that verified coffee-growing data is key to helping Vietnamese exporters meet sustainability requirements, secure market access, and increase export value. Vietnam highly appreciates the valuable support of the German Government through KfW (German Reconstruction Bank), which is one of Vietnam's largest bilateral donors. Such international cooperation supports Vietnam's efforts towards achieving sustainable development goals. Under its one-party system, Vietnam faces the dual challenge of economic growth and alignment with international standards. In particular, strengthened environmental regulations and increased supply chain transparency directly impact the competitiveness of export industries. The Vietnamese government aims to complete a specialized legal and institutional framework, as well as governance, management, and supervision mechanisms in line with international standards during the 2026-2030 period, ensuring transparency, safety, and efficiency.
