Cambodian Foreign Minister to Chair Meeting on Next OIF Chief Selection

PHNOM PENH, June 29, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Prak Sokhonn, will preside over an extraordinary session of the Ministerial Conference of La Francophonie in Paris on June 30, as member states begin the process of selecting the next Secretary General of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the 47th Extraordinary Session will focus on choosing the OIF chief for the 2027–2030 term. The meeting comes at a pivotal moment for the organization, which brings together 88 states and governments united by the French language and shared values of cooperation, cultural diversity and multilateral dialogue. Delegates are expected to examine the visions and programmes of four candidates vying for the post. Their recommendations will be forwarded to heads of state and government, who will make the final decision at the 20th Summit of La Francophonie, scheduled in Phnom Penh on November 15–16, 2026. Hosting the summit underscores Cambodia’s growing role within the Francophone community. On the sidelines of the Paris meeting, Prak Sokhonn will also hold bilateral talks with several counterparts. According to the ministry, discussions will center on strengthening ties, expanding cooperation and addressing issues of mutual concern, ranging from education and cultural exchanges to economic partnerships and sustainable development.
