Two Rare Coral Species Found in Ca Mau Marine Protected Area, Boosting Conservation Value

Two rare coral species, identified as endangered in Vietnam, have been recorded in the Hon Hang sea area, part of the Hon Chuoi island cluster in Ca Mau Province. This discovery underscores the significant biodiversity of the region and is expected to enhance the value of the marine protected area. Mr. Bui Nhat Phuong, Deputy Director of the Ca Mau Department of Coastal, Island, and Fisheries, announced on July 24 that the species confirmed were Pocillopora damicornis (branching coral) and Porites lobata (lobe coral). The findings were made during a survey of fishery resources and biodiversity conducted by the department in coordination with the Center for Marine Life Conservation and Community Development within the marine protected area. Both Pocillopora damicornis and Porites lobata are listed as rare aquatic species at risk of extinction in Vietnam, necessitating their protection, restoration, and development. Pocillopora damicornis, belonging to the branching coral family, can form extensive colonies several meters wide. It is found in coastal areas from central to southern Vietnam, as well as in the southwestern islands and the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos. Porites lobata, a massive coral, typically forms large structures with undulating lobes on its surface. It has been observed in numerous Vietnamese waters, including the southwestern islands and the Truong Sa archipelago. According to the survey team, these coral species have small natural populations and have historically been exploited for lime production, construction, and decoration. Their presence indicates that the Hon Hang sea area holds considerable value for biodiversity and requires protection to maintain its ecosystem. To delineate the boundaries and improve management effectiveness, the Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee has approved a project to install 200 specialized boundary buoys with a total budget of VND 18 billion (approximately USD 710,000). The Department of Coastal, Island, and Fisheries is finalizing consultation and construction procedures, with completion anticipated in 2026. The buoy system will define functional zones and help prevent illegal entry, exploitation, or other activities that could harm the marine ecosystem. The Ca Mau Marine Protected Area, established in 2024, spans 27,000 hectares. It comprises 2,800 hectares of strictly protected zones, 11,230 hectares for ecological restoration, 3,970 hectares for services and administration, and a 9,000-hectare buffer zone.
