Merdeka Run 2026 to Feature 8,000 Runners for 81st Indonesian Independence Anniversary

JAKARTA - Merdeka Run 2026 will be attended by 8,000 runners. The event is part of the series of celebrations for the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia. The Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), Erick Thohir, said that the Merdeka Run was one of the activities that were eagerly awaited because it involved the public directly. "This event is one of the events that are eagerly awaited because it directly involves public participation," said Erick in a press conference held in Jakarta. Merdeka Run 2026 is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 29, 2026. The selection of the time was made to avoid clashes with the implementation of a car-free day. Erick said that in addition to presenting running activities, Merdeka Run 2026 will also be enlivened by a number of attractions. One of them is a drone show that is combined with a visual concept involving participants. "Hopefully there will be some interesting things later. One of them is a drone show. Runners are also expected to wear spotlight clothes so that it becomes visually interesting," said Erick. Merdeka Run prioritizes Indonesian citizens (WNI), but foreign citizens (WNA) are still allowed to take part in the activity. The involvement of foreign citizens in this activity also shows the openness of the Indonesian people. Erick revealed that in addition to the general public, the committee will also invite national athletes, public figures, ministers, to disabled participants. "We are very open. Disabled people will definitely have their share. The name is also a celebration of 81 years of Indonesian independence, so of course how do we make sure that this community is an important part of this event," said Erick. The Merdeka Run route will start from the National Monument (Monas) and Merdeka Palace areas. Meanwhile, the finish point will still be adjusted to the eight-kilometer route set by the committee.
