PCG Continues Aerial Search for 8 Missing from MV June Aster Fire Off Palawan

CALAPAN CITY—The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) conducted an aerial survey over the waters off Palawan, extending to Bantac Island, as search and response operations continued on Tuesday (Sept. 22) for eight people still missing following the fire that gutted passenger vessel MV June Aster off Coron town two weeks ago, according to Commodore Noemie Escala. The PCG has been intensifying its search for the missing individuals since the incident occurred on September 7. Escala said the aerial search was conducted in coordination with the maritime search and rescue (SAR) team. "We have deployed our assets to conduct aerial and maritime searches to locate the missing passengers," Escala said. The MV June Aster, a passenger vessel, caught fire while at sea off Coron town, Palawan. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Several passengers and crew members were rescued, but eight individuals remain unaccounted for. The PCG has been coordinating with other government agencies and local authorities to ensure a comprehensive search effort. Filipinos rely heavily on sea travel, especially for inter-island transport. The country's geography, consisting of over 7,000 islands, makes maritime safety a critical issue.
