Ho Chi Minh City to Pilot On-Demand Microbuses for Alley Access

Ho Chi Minh City is developing a new microbus operational model to enhance public transport access in its narrow alleys, which comprise over 60% of the city's urban road network. This new model will operate on-demand, allowing users to request pick-ups and drop-offs via a dedicated application. The microbuses will serve designated points marked on the app, enabling residents in areas previously inaccessible to traditional large buses to connect efficiently with major transit routes. Ho Chi Minh City faces pressing challenges in alleviating traffic congestion and improving public transport convenience due to rapid population growth and urbanization. The dense urban fabric, characterized by numerous narrow alleys, has limited the reach and efficiency of conventional bus services. The introduction of microbuses aims to address these geographical and structural constraints, creating a more accessible public transportation system for a wider segment of the population. This initiative can be seen as part of the Vietnamese Communist Party's state-led economic growth strategy. Under its one-party system, the government prioritizes urban development and infrastructure enhancement, with the expansion of the transportation network being a core component. Furthermore, while maintaining complex relations with China, the development of an efficient urban transport system is crucial for revitalizing the domestic economy and improving the quality of life for its citizens. If successful, this microbus model could be replicated in other major urban areas, contributing to the modernization of Vietnam's public transport system.
