Canadian Man Arrested in Chiang Mai Over Alleged Sexual Assault

CHIANG MAI — A 38-year-old Canadian man was arrested at a hotel in central Chiang Mai on a court warrant for an alleged sexual assault involving a British woman during a party. Tourist police and officers from Mae Ping Police Station apprehended the suspect, identified as Avdo Giovanni Ochoa Saenz, at his hotel room around 11 PM on September 22nd. The arrest followed coordination between the British Consulate in Chiang Mai and Thai authorities after a British tourist reported she had been sexually assaulted. According to information provided to the police, the woman had traveled to Chiang Mai and met with a group of friends, including the suspect, on September 13th. The group reportedly consumed alcohol together before the alleged sexual assault occurred. The woman subsequently filed a complaint with investigators at Mae Ping Police Station. Police gathered evidence and arranged for her to undergo a medical examination. The evidence was then presented to the Chiang Mai Provincial Court to secure an arrest warrant. Police also examined information on the suspect’s mobile phone, revealing travel details that indicated he was planning to depart Thailand on the morning of September 23rd. Officers therefore acted swiftly to locate and arrest him at his hotel before he could leave the country.
