MANILA, Philippines — The Visayas grid will be placed under a yellow alert for four hours on Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., as five large coal power plants remain offline, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) announced. In an advisory, the NGCP said the yellow alert status will be in effect from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. This is as available capacity was logged at 2,478 megawatts (MW), while peak demand was 2,291 MW. The Visayas grid, which heavily relies on power imports from Luzon and Mindanao, has been experiencing tight electricity supply for months. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Sharon Garin had earlier stated that while the Visayas has many renewable energy power plants, it still needs steadier backing from baseload assets. DOE officials expect the situation to improve with more capacities coming online.
