Youth Group Criticizes Inconsistent Class Suspensions Amid Monsoon Rains

MANILA, Philippines — The Progressive Youth Group Samahan ng Progresibong Kabataan (SPARK) has criticized the government's handling of class suspensions amid recent monsoon rains, stating that frequent and inconsistent cancellations have further disrupted learning for millions of students. "Such inconsistency and inaccuracy on the part of our government is unacceptable," said a SPARK spokesperson, emphasizing that class suspension decisions should be prompt and accurate. According to SPARK, delayed or conflicting information regarding class suspensions causes confusion for students and parents, hindering their learning plans. This issue is particularly acute in rural areas or regions with underdeveloped infrastructure, where communication delays can directly lead to lost learning opportunities. The group is calling on the Department of Education and local government units to provide more timely and accurate information and to adopt flexible approaches tailored to local conditions. The Philippines frequently experiences heavy rains during the monsoon season, leading to floods and landslides. Consequently, many schools are temporarily closed. However, the criteria for these closures and the timing of information dissemination are often inconsistent, frequently causing confusion among students, parents, and teachers.
