Phetchaburi Launches 14.7 Billion Baht Flood Prevention Project

Phetchaburi Province in southwestern Thailand has launched a large-scale infrastructure development project aimed at mitigating flood damage that has long plagued local residents. The project specifically targets Thayang and Cha-am districts, areas particularly vulnerable to flooding. The total investment for this initiative amounts to 14.7 billion baht (approximately $390 million USD), with the construction of a new 38-kilometer drainage canal forming its core component. This canal is designed to efficiently channel large volumes of rainwater during the monsoon season to the sea, thereby preventing inland inundation. Phetchaburi Province has a geographical characteristic of high annual rainfall, with rapid water surges from mountainous areas often causing floods in the plains. The region has experienced significant damage multiple times in the past, severely impacting residents' lives and the local economy. This project is anticipated to be a fundamental solution to these chronic issues. Local authorities plan to proceed with comprehensive flood control measures, including the renovation of existing rivers and canals, and enhancing water storage capacity, in addition to the construction of the drainage canal. Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly improve the region's disaster resilience, contributing to the safety of residents and the stabilization of economic activities.
